Hedgehogs and the A24
Hedgehogs are an introduced species and are considered a serious pest in New Zealand. They are a significant part of ongoing nationwide conservation pest control. Due in large part to hedgehogs, wētā and skinks are no longer as common in New Zealand backyards. The eggs and chicks of ground nesting birds are also extremely vulnerable to predation by hedgehogs.
You can read more about why hedgehogs are a serious risk to New Zealand’s biodiversity on the Department of Conservation's website here.
The Smart Trap can kill hedgehogs so if you wish to avoid trapping them, set your Smart Trap on a tree or post 30 cm above the ground so they cannot climb into it.
