How to replace the paste and CO2

Your trap is only as good as its paste. The Automatic Paste Pump which came with your trap only lasts six months once activated, after this it needs replacing to ensure your paste is fresh and attractive to pests.  Replacing your CO2 at the same time keeps trap-maintenance to just twice a year, and ensures this important part of your trap is in tip top shape. It also ensures your trap remains covered by our manufacturer’s warranty.

When you need paste and CO2 you can purchase them individually or in an 6 Month Top up pack here or from one of our stockists. Trap Location Cards are supplied with the 6 Month Top up Pack, so if you are planning on shifting your trap to a new location set the location cards first to find the optimal spot.  Once your trap is located in it's new position follow these steps to install the new paste and CO2 in the trap:

1. Unscrew the gas canister

Remove the Counter (if using one) and unscrew the gas canister. You may hear any remaining gas in the canister escaping. This may cause the canister to freeze rapidly, so it’s a good idea to unscrew the gas canister using a cloth to protect your hands. You can recycle the empty CO2 canister at your nearest scrap metal recycling facility.

Remove the shroud cap and the automatic paste pump.

If you are going to shift your trap to a new position fire your trap to remove the final charge. Although the gas canister has been removed, the trap may still be live with one charge remaining in its chamber. To safely test fire your trap use a pen or twig, reach it down through the top of the trap and use it to push the trigger to one side. If there is still gas in the trap, the orange striker will be triggered. If nothing happens, all gas has been flushed out and the trap is safe to move.

2. Power up the trap

Once the trap is installed in it's new location you can remove the black cap from the new gas canister. Be careful to keep the screw thread clean and free of debris. Screw the canister firmly into the trap. Hand tighten only.

3. Test fire the trap

It's a good idea to test fire your trap at this point to ensure it is working as it should. Reach a pen or twig down through the top of the trap and push the trigger gently to the side. The striker will fire with a bang and then retract. Always keep your hands clear of trap entrances and always treat the trap as live.

4. Activate the Automatic Paste Pump

Dispose of the old automatic paste pump in the rubbish and activate the new one by removing the 10c coin from the top of the automatic paste pump just before you put it into the shroud cap. Do not remove the automatic paste pump lid yet. It is vital you remove the coin or the automatic paste pump will not activate.

5. Nest the Automatic Paste Pump into the shroud cap

With the automatic paste pump activated, gently squeeze and shape the automatic paste pump into the shroud cap. It will be a tight fit. Push the automatic paste pump into the shroud cap until its skirted edge sits aligned with the edge of the shroud cap rim. It will then easily screw into the paste cradle.

6. Remove the Automatic Paste Pump screw cap

Now remove the automatic paste pump screw cap. A small amount of paste may be forced out, that’s fine – there’s still enough paste for 6 months. Wipe this excess paste below the entrance to your trap to start attracting pests.

7. Screw and secure the shroud cap and Automatic Paste Pump

Place the shroud cap with the automatic paste pump into the paste cradle and screw into the internal thread with a few turns. Once the automatic paste pump is screwed into the paste cradle, secure the shroud cap onto the trap by pushing down and clicking into place with another turn. The automatic paste pump is now set and active and your trap is ready to go for another 6 months of trapping. You can pre feed the trap if you choose to, and check the kill count on your Goodnature App or Digital Counter whenever you'd like an update on your trap's activity. That's all there is to it!
